INTERNATIONAL CALLS

Human mind’s tendency to ask questions and find answers has transformed our world into a technology savvy assortment of gadgets and gears. While some look really hi-fi, other boons of advancement are quite deceiving on their faces. Some conveniences that we use on day-to-day basis appear so habitual that they do not awe-inspire. One such heavily exploited invention of human brilliance is ‘the ability to converse with people across countries worldwide using a very modest term called International call!

To define, International Calls are long distance calls via landline or mobile phones, wherein two people from different countries are connected in a fluent conversation, as if they were using a walkie-talkie. There is a unique ISD or IDD (International Direct Dialing) code for each country on the world map, akin to STD codes within the country that must be prefixed to the number for direct dialing.

It took mankind almost 100 years to make his first IDD call, ever since man learnt to make telephone calls. The striving endeavors to establish international calls started way back in 1891, when the first-ever submarine telephone cable was laid between England and France. In the wake of absence of robust technology to work underwater, the need of wireless technology was felt. As a result, radio made way for the cables in 1927, when a commercial telephone service was started between New York and London. Till now the international calls were made through an operator only.

It is only in 1963 that UK finally witnessed introduction of International Direct Dialing (IDD) upon regular resolute efforts. The first IDD connection was established between London and Paris. It still took significant time for Direct Dialing direct to spread across the world. New York and London got connected through IDD in 1970. Only by 1980 did over 87 countries could enjoy this privilege, which now is as common as if it was always there. Now you may come across very few destinations where international calls still need to be connected through an operator.

The cost of international calls has also considerably gone down upon proliferation of the technology around the world. As data reflects, a single call from UK to New York incurred three pounds for three minutes way back in 1966, equivalent to around five pounds as per prevailing rates.

Further, the cost of making international calls has slashed down to minimum as at present with Voice Over Internet Phones (VOIP). Also known as the broadband or Internet telephony, VOIP has enabled the users to make International phone calls anywhere in the world, only subject to a stable Internet connection. Over and above faster and highly economical voice connection, VOIP enables international calls in conjunction with video conversation, simultaneous data exchange, audio conferencing, management of address books, as well as, keeping a track of online friends and acquaintances.

To conclude, International call is a product of man’s superior vision, intellectual brilliance and perseverance that makes our life convenient and luxurious, both at the same time. In tune with man’s habit, the phenomenon is still moving towards further refinement eternally.
